Foods to be Avoided May be Good for Our Health (Part 1)

Jun 12, 2007 @ 02:18 am by Healthy Me

Most of us have grown up with some advice about what to eat and what not to eat. Some pieces of advice should really be followed. There are however some common foods that we have been warned against that may actually be beneficial to us in the right amount.

Chocolate

Flavanol is a known antioxidant that can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Researchers claim that it is present in chocolate. Flavonols can assist the body in processing nitric oxide which is necessary in keeping the right blood pressure and proper blood flow. Flavonols can also stop the oxidizing and clogging effects of fats in arteries. Studies show that a single serving of cocoa may contain more flavonols than either green tea or red wine.

Some kinds of chocolates however are better than others. Dark chocolate generally contains more flavonols than milk chocolate. Highly processed chocolate products may also contain fewer benefits since processing destroys part of the cacao beans’ flavanol content. Some chocolate product manufacturers are in the process of discovering methods to preserve the benefits of cacao.

Alcohol

Excessive drinking of alcohol can cause liver damage, cancer and gastrointestinal problems to name a few. Taking alcoholic drinks in moderation however can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. It can also help boost the lipid profile. Red wine in particular contains Resveratrol which is actually an antioxidant that can help prevent internal blood clots from forming and blocking the blood vessels. Drinking in moderation is of course, subject to personal interpretation. Drinking one standard glass of alcohol every other day however may be deemed moderate.
